Produced in partnership with the Indian Plywood Research & Training Institute (IPIRTI), Bangalore, a Hindi language version of American hardwoods & their suitability for the Indian market is now available. The latest addition to the American Hardwood Export Council’s (AHEC) long list of technical publications is designed to provide a handy-size guide to American hardwood species for India’s specifiers and manufacturers

American hardwoods & their suitability for the Indian market has been created for the specific role of assisting India’s architects, interior designers and furniture and joinery manufacturers in gaining a better understanding of the physical, mechanical and working properties of nine of America’s key commercial and exported hardwood species; red alder, ash, cherry, hard maple, soft maple, tulipwood, red oak, white oak and walnut.

All nine species underwent a series of rigorous testing under strict IPIRTI laboratory conditions. Physical and mechanical properties were carried out in accordance with Indian Standard IS 1708:1986, while sound absorption coefficients were evaluated according to Indian Standard IS 10420:1982. Durability tests were also carried out using accelerated tests against fungus, borers and termites.

The results clearly demonstrate that these species can offer Indian designers and manufacturers new opportunities to develop sustainable hardwood products, which are fashionable and can perform to the highest standards. The publication will be to download in PDF or order in hard copy free of charge from AHEC’s new website, www.americanhardwood.org. It will also be made available on AHEC’s stand at the upcoming Indiawood show in Bangalore, as well as at future AHEC events.
